“Solutions To Living Life & Having Fun At Home”!

Retirement isn’t the end of the road; it is a whole new beginning, a chance to rediscover our old passions and explore new horizons. For us Baby Boomers and Gen Xers, this is our time to shake off the shackles of routine and dive into a world brimming with new possibilities.

Imagine waking up each day with a sparkle in your eye, ready to seize the day’s adventures. This is a dream and is a reality well within our grasp. Retirement becomes your canvas, and you are the artist. Now is the time to find what makes our heart sing. Is it music, art, dance, gardening or maybe volunteering. Whatever it is, there is a community or class out there just waiting for you. And the best part is you are not alone. There are countless others just like you and me ready to share experiences alongside us.

Gone are the days when retirement meant slowing down and sitting in that rocking chair on the porch. Today’s Baby Boomers and Gen Xers are flipping the script, choosing to live life to the fullest. It is about redefining what it means to be retired and embracing the freedom that comes with it. We’ve earned this time – now let’s make it count.

As Baby Boomers and Gen Xers enter our golden and silver years over 88% of us want to live the rest of our lives in our own “Home Sweet Home” and still have fun while doing it. Many have embraced the concept of “Fun After Fifty” seeking to maintain active and fulfilling lifestyles in our later years. This decision often comes with a desire to maintain our independence, familiarity, and the control over our living environment at the home we have lived in for years. Moving in with grown children is the absolute last resort because the burden would be too high of a price to pay for both our children and us.

Many realize that a few changes to our home will allow us to stay in the home longer. The idea of moving to a retirement community or assisted living facility is alien to most yet we know we will need to make some changes to ensure living the rest of our lives comfortably in our own home and we are ready to consider changing whatever we need to make that happen.

What are some solutions to living life and having fun at home for our aging Baby Boomers and Gen Xers? Boomers Magic will explore numerous solutions and strategies that cater to the needs and desires of both aging groups while enhancing the quality of life for us and ensuring our homes become vibrant hubs of fulfillment and joy. First and foremost, consider the current space your home has. Maybe just a little rearrangement will accomplish the additional space needed to make movement much easier.

Let’s begin our journey by exploring 6 of the most important categories that need to be considered:

Age At Home

Safe At Home

Exercise At Home

Secure At Home

Entertain At Home

Smart Home

Age at home

Age At Home

The concept of Age At Home focuses on creating a living environment that allows aging gracefully.  This will often involve making modifications to the home to enhance accessibility, such as installing handrails in the bath, adding ramps for easy entry access, optimizing lighting for better visibility, designing open spaces that can prevent accidental falls, and even considering adjusting counter heights for ease of use. The goal is to create an environment that supports independence and comfort and allows navigation of the home with ease.

The bathroom is the #1 most popular modification, followed by changes to the kitchen, stair lifts, and home medical monitoring systems. These systems allow grown children to monitor parents easily from afar without intruding.

A new idea becoming very popular is installing a glass sunroom for those who are unable to walk around outside yet still enjoy a sunlit room with outdoor views. This also allows many of us to develop our green thumbs without a great deal of work.

Another new trend is to build an additional room for in-home caregivers’ living quarters, which can extend our age at home for years and also provide basic care when needed, such as meals, laundry, and medication dispensing.

Safe at home

Safe At Home

Being Safe At Home is a top priority for all seniors who want to remain living at home, and several measures can be taken to make homes safer.

Solutions like home security systems, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, improved lighting, and non-slip flooring can prevent accidents.

These items not only provide peace of mind for family members but also allows us Baby Boomers and Gen Xers to enjoy our homes without unnecessary concerns.

Exercise at home

Exercise At Home

Who said workouts can’t be a blast? Many of us Baby Boomers and Gen Xers are known for the best music ever created, so put on the music and let loose in a dance workout. Dancing not only boosts our cardiovascular health but also releases endorphins that make us feel good. It is all about moving and having fun!

Staying active is crucial for maintaining our health and vitality. But let’s be honest, not everyone wants to spend their retirement at the gym, I certainly don’t. The good news is that there are plenty of enjoyable ways to keep fit that do not involve lifting heavy weights or running marathons.

Maintaining an active lifestyle is crucial for overall physical and mental well-being, and choosing to Exercise At Home is a no-brainer. There are many options to incorporate into daily life to ensure fitness in the comfort of your own home.

Online home exercise programs tailored to seniors can include activities like Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, Stretching, Resistance Band Training, and maybe even a Home Gym in a dedicated space. The internet also contains tons of programs that are easy to follow and return to each day.

Simple options such as resistance bands, yoga mats, and exercise bikes can be used daily to enhance our fitness.

Secure at home

Secure At Home

Protecting our home and personal information by installing security systems such as doorbell cameras and motion sensors, keeping doors and windows locked, and being cautious about sharing sensitive information online or over the phone is a great starting point.

A panic button is another way of getting help if needed. Detecting falls can be as simple as wearing a device or keeping your cellphone with you at all times. Many alert systems will call for help.

Another often overlooked area centers around the digital front, using tougher, secure passwords and understanding online safety to protect against scams and fraud. Scammers and fraudsters focus on preying on both the Baby Boomers and Gen Xers generations more than any other age group.

Finally, regular home maintenance checks of all systems installed can ensure that potential hazards are identified and dealt with. These can be done annually and will provide you with added peace of mind.

Entertain at home

Entertain At Home

Entertaining at home has never been easier and takes on a new meaning as we begin to age.  There are countless ways to stay engaged right from the comfort of our own homes. Retirement doesn’t mean an end to being productive.

Both Baby Boomers and Gen Xers can discover a new hidden passion by just taking a little time to think about what we would like to do.

Starting new hobbies and creating a space within the home just for entertainment can help combat any feeling of isolation.

Using the new space for entertainment can encompass crafts, puzzles, painting, writing, needlework, window or patio gardening, and even learning to play a musical instrument.

My neighbor, who is in her 70s, began putting together jigsaw puzzles. She started small with a 300-piece puzzle but has steadily tackled harder and harder ones. Now, she finishes 1,000-piece puzzles and then frames the special ones that she sells at craft shows.

Don’t forget movie night! One of the easiest apps to begin using is a streaming service for our TV. Movie nights have become a cozy way to spend an evening at home. They normally come with a wide array of movies, TV shows, and documentaries.

You might want to keep a list of the movies you have seen and even ask your friends for recommendations.

Streaming movies is very enjoyable and the cost is worth our friends and family coming to share quality time with us.

You can start by offering popcorn and sodas and then progress to more elaborate finger foods or, better yet, make the finger foods the cost of admission to the movie. What fun it will be.

Smart home

Smart Home

Enter digital technology. What a great time to be alive! Today’s smart home makes life so much easier and more enjoyable for us at the touch of a button or the sound of a voice command.

Often we Baby Boomers and Gen Xers get overwhelmed with the new gadgets on the market. The best approach is to start small with one app at a time.

After mastering the first app, move on to the next one. Soon, you will be an old hand and very proud to demonstrate your new knowledge to others in your community.

Other popular apps are thermostat control, turning on and off home lighting, and even locking the doors. You will become a pro in no time and find that these apps really are easy to use and helpful at the same time.

A final app for this discussion is centered around video calls, social media, and playing online games. All three have distinct advantages, but the best has to be video calls.

Connecting with loved ones and friends online can bridge the gap between isolation and add a feeling of companionship.

Keeping up with the grandkids puts smiles on everyone’s face. Make it a weekly event and begin a list of things to talk about each week.

Social media allows you to follow all the younger generations in your family including the grandkids and even other friends who you may have gone to school with or worked with. Sharing photos, funny stories, and just catching up can turn your life into endless happiness.

Do you need special equipment for digital technology? Not really. Most of us Baby Boomers and Gen Xers already have a cell phone.

One upgrade that might be a nice improvement to that small cell phone screen would be a tablet such as an iPad or Amazon’s Fire Tablet. These devices enable you to see a larger screen and are great for talking with the grandchildren.

For the audio side, if you want to use your voice to control your home, you might consider Amazon Echo or Google Home, which both use voice-activated assistance to control different devices such as lighting, temperature, and door locks.
