Baby Boomers are not the first generation to be worried about the way they look and about their aging skin.
With brushstrokes on a canvas in the year 1546, Lucas Cranach the Elder, created a striking scene that would come to represent one of our most universal desires across all of the ages. The scene painted depicts an outdoor pool at its center with a procession of women moving toward the pool from the left side of the painting to exiting the pool on the right. The pool has gentle steps descending into its depth along the entire length of each of its fours sides. To the left of the pool we see some older and frail women arriving on horse drawn carriages, others are being pushed in wheel barrows, while some are even being carried on the backs of their relatives. Their faces and bodies are clearly distorted with aging, weathered and diseased. Some are seen entering the pool with great difficulty. The bathers then appear to be slowly crossing the pool. To the right side of the picture we see young and beautiful women emerging from the water, visibly joyful and filled with vitality. Beside the right side exit of the pool, wonderful and desirable things await them: beautiful dresses to don, a decadent banquet with live music to enjoy, along with carefree dancing with handsome young men and frolicking about in the open air. This is, after all, The Fountain of Youth.

The idea of halting – and even reversing – the effects of aging are as old as time itself. Appearing in artists paintings is not the only reference to The Fountain of Youth, it also appears in writings by Herodotus, often called The Father of History, in the 5th century BC with versions of it recorded by many different cultures into their myths. In our modern era science and medicine have finally come to offer us actually effective ways to get more out of life, to slow down the ill effects of time and wear, and yet our culture still holds tightly to the latest incarnations of the magic of the Fountain of Youth. Terms describing millions of cosmetic wrinkle treatments, anti-aging creams and even anti-aging foods pop up in magazines, TV and dispensed jargon of the so called ‘experts’ may change but the meaning remains the same: ‘rejuvenation,’ ‘age-defying,’ ‘regenerative medicine’ and among the boldest of all: ‘anti-aging.’ In fact, the term ‘anti-aging medicine’ has been gaining so much traction in the media, in advertising, and in our collective consciousness that there is now even an American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. But what does all of this mean to a Baby Boomer like you, your current health levels, and how could it impact your life?
First, we must admit that all of us in the baby boomer generation have the desire to live longer and joyfully and that desire is therefore likely to be around for good because the Millennial Generation is more concerned than the boomers about how they look. But there is a fundamental distinction that must also be kept in the baby boomer mind and it is probably best summed up in the saying, “Youth is wasted on the young.” In other words, it takes a lot of living to best learn how to live well. So why obsess about youth and a youthful appearance? Why envy the young and continue to long for times past? After all, time never stops and there is something truly unique and valuable about each stage of our lives, especially the present that we baby boomers probably have not considered.
The True Fountain of Youth for Baby Boomers
The true fountain of youth is a state of mind. It always has been and it always will be. Having said that know that it is a very unique state of mind which must be strong enough to influence, then direct the physical body along with its behaviors. It isn’t good enough for a baby boomer to “think yourself young” or to simply pretend to be younger than your years would suggest.
Our obsession with “youth” is the product of an ageist society and it doesn’t help anyone! The young can be carefree, impulsive, confused, most of the time spoiled, often surprisingly miserable and completely riddled with angst. Many of us in the baby boomer generation didn’t have the easiest or most fun time growing up. So why the youth-envy then? Probably because “if we got a chance to be young again we would do things differently!” Does that sound familiar? In fact, this sentiment admits that we know better! It is openly admitting that the many years of our baby boomer lives have given us the perspective we need to live our best years yet! It’s not youth itself that we boomers seek, but the energy and vitality we commonly associate with our own youth that we want. Looking great and attractive at 50, 60, 70 and beyond!
Ending the Fixation on Youth
So let us stop fixating about youth and instead focus on becoming the greatest versions of ourselves that ever lived! This is the time to shine and our state of mind is the key! The baby boomers definition alone shows us that we don’t need to pretend or imagine thinking more youthfully. We simply need to do some major house cleaning and clear out those stuffy old habits that we’ve picked up during our family raising years and dust off our energetic, optimistic selves that we’ve probably hid in some closet decades ago when career, family, mortgages and grown up responsibilities smacked us right into the humdrum life called adulthood. Many of us boomers are now beginning to see the tail-end of most of those responsibilities and stress creators. Now one of our main challenges is being able to stretch ourselves back to our full strength and height, to remember our original humor, irreverence, and carefree attitude towards the world’s rules. For the true baby boomer rules never really went far anyway. An example of that would be just simply remembering Woodstock, Janice Joplin and oh yeah Jimmy Hendrix. Can you hear their songs?
This state of mind is the first cornerstone step towards re-energizing your life and re-activating your true vitality, the one you’ve always had! Once you bring that old, renewed self to the front you will find that you’ll have more energy, happiness, and a much more optimistic, adventurous outlook on life. Perhaps you’ll decide to run your first road race, or learn to dance the tango, or even learn a beautiful foreign language. Amazingly enough, science bears this out: Many studies have found that when people in the later stages of life maintain the habits they once enjoyed long ago their minds and bodies begin to display the capacities of much younger individuals. The simple pleasures of life are perennial, it is just that we have temporarily suppressed our enjoyment of them during the first chapter of our lives! The joys of food, music, dancing, laughter, friendship, adventure, love and play have always been with us, we simply ignored some of them for a couple decades.
Science will continue to bring us wonderful face creams, skin treatments, enjoyable massages, valuable nutritional solutions and lifesaving medical treatments but youth they do not make. The greatest generation is the baby boomer generation. Let’s not try to pretend to be young. Instead, simply clean out the clutter of that hidden closet to reveal the unique, vibrant self you’ve always carried with you and let it guide you to the best times of your life!
