Shake-n-Shape can “Get your motor running”!
Baby boomers have learned that life is full of surprises and you find them in the oddest places. Take ‘fitness’ for example. At least since the ‘jogging’ craze first appeared on the scene back in the 70’s the advertising industry and the TV news media has made it crystal clear that we ought to care about our ‘fitness’ and about our ‘shape.’ The leg-warmer-equipped aerobics exercises of the 80’s, the ubiquitous step classes of the 90’s, and the explosion of celebrity workouts for a zillion different branded exercises haven’t let us forget this message for over 40 years. And yet, baby boomers are more out of shape today, and suffering with more lifestyle-related health issues like excess weight often called obesity, high blood pressure and sugar diabetes, than at any other point in history. It seems that even the presidential fitness test, fitness centers popping up near them and today’s fitness watches don’t make a difference. How can this be?

Defining Fitness in Baby Boomer Terms
Before worrying about our “fitness” we need to define what that term means to each and every one of us boomers. This is especially true because the commonest definition of this term is “the condition of being physically fit” where fit is “the quality of being suitable to fulfill a particular role or task.” Think about it… if you are seeking “fitness” you first need to define what particular role or task you wish to be fit for! Not many people have asked themselves that before rushing to buy the latest, have to have, DVD collection of their favorite celebrity taking them through countless hours of the latest exhausting super kickboxing exercise routines. Sadly, all too often these experiences usual end up in disappointment, a sinking sense of failure, and results in yet another DVD collection litters the vicinity of the television in the family room. You never actually wanted to be a kick boxer, did you? Yet six pack abs might fit. Consider this the next time you hear the word “fit” by simply asking “Fit for what, exactly?” We’ll return to this in a moment.
Now let’s define “health.” Health is typically considered to be “the state of being free from injury or disease” which is pretty distinct from our definition of ‘fitness.’ In fact, those who are extremely fit among us, such as professional athletes and Olympians, are actually not often healthy. Their bodies are usually in a state of extreme heightened stress and inflammation due to excessive training. This explains why one can see an NFL player’s Achilles’ tendon snap in the middle of a game. He is fit to perform in the game but his body is not healthy enough to withstand the demands, so it breaks when performing an otherwise normal movement. Likewise, among women, it is quite common for Olympic gymnasts who are at the very top of their game to not have had their monthly period in several months or even years and to also suffer from osteoporosis and eating disorders. They may well be “fit” to win a gymnastics gold medal, but they are certainly not “healthy.”
So if you wish to pursue “fitness” then be sure to first define what sports or activities you wish to be ‘fit’ for. This doesn’t need to be an Olympic sport, however! It can well be working in the yard – gardening, a round of golf or playing with the grand-kids at the local park. The point is that it needs to be an activity that holds true meaning for you to help get your better baby boomer body shape. To most people crunches and jumping jacks don’t hold “true meaning” for them. This makes doing them on a regular basis, for years on end, a pretty unsustainable proposition. Which, in turn, drains motivation and eventually leads to failure for the baby boomer.
Keys To Success are in the Baby Boomers Hands
Scientists who study what leads to successful behavior modification, such as establishing an effective exercise regime often referred to as a fitness plan, have identified key elements that keep a person from failing the way most of us have done before is in the past. As hinted before, one very important key ingredient is motivation. If you love the sport of golf then you won’t need any incentives to put down the remote, get off the couch, head to the links and start getting in shape. For everything else however, you will probably need motivation and a lot of it.
When a particular exercise is the key to enabling you to enjoy hiking the great outdoors with your grandchildren, take your children to the beach for the weekend, do your job correctly, or dance with your special loved one to your favorite songs then you will be far more likely to stick to it. This is to say, there is an important and meaningful purpose to the exercise which may not be the most enjoyable in and of itself. But as long as you remember why (or for whom) you are doing the exercise in question, you will keep coming back for more and you will succeed at becoming fit.
Baby Boomers Can Have Fitness for Life
Even though each one of us has different secondary motivations to remain healthy, such as children, friends, or grandchildren, we all share the primary, and some might say ‘ultimate,’ motivation: To improve the length and quality of our own lives. In other words, what better motivation is there than to know that the more you care for and use your body (within reason!) the more and better it will serve you for years and decades to come? The old adage, “Use it or lose it” has a lot of truth to it. This saying is especially important because nature really does operate by it: If you don’t use a particular set of muscles they will waste away, if you don’t stretch and strain your ligaments then they will weaken, if you don’t load your bones they will become more porous, and if you eat more energy foods that you do not use then your body will put it away for a rainy day… in the form of fat.
This even applies to the baby boomer mind: If you do not challenge your mind then it loses its agility, sharpness and focus. All because the human body is designed to use its resources in the most efficient way possible. It mobilizes its building material from unused areas to those where they are needed the most and used the most decreasing it where it remains unused and wasted.
What are YOUR Goals For Being Fit and In Shape?
Instead of wanting to have the body of Sean Connery or Jack LaLanne for no real good reason why not ask yourself a more essential question: “What do I want my body for?” Based on your answer you can then begin to determine what activities you need to integrate into your life in order to accomplish your unique goals and then your shapely form will follow your function.
A healthy life is one that is lived with purpose and passion. If you let them, both of these life forces, fitness & shape, will conspire to mold your body to its rightful size, proportions, and most importantly, abilities. Life is too short to spend it just exercising. You are much better off living it doing what you love with the ones who matter most!
