We, baby boomers, are living at a time unlike any other in the history of mankind. Until recently our species had always had to struggle to find enough food to eat. However, today the most privileged of societies on the planet have way too much food to eat and a majority of it is classified as junk food. The excess food in our lives has reached such a degree that food itself has, quite ironically, become one of the top underlying causes of chronic illness including obesity and early death. What’s more, throughout the past decade the curse of excess that haunts our culture has been threatening to shorten the lives of the baby boomers own children and now grandchildren so as to make their estimated life expectancy actually shorter than the baby boomer themselves.
These sobering facts about our present, as well as the projections of the world we are leaving to our beloved future generations, should be ringing alarm bells within each one of us. We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic which is costing us a fortune, decreasing our quality of life, and often even shortening our lives. So naturally, we baby boomers are very concerned and something needs to be done immediately to ensure that chapter 2 of our lives is everything we desire.
Did the Baby Boomer Cause This?
Not completely but baby boomers do have some responsibility here. For the most part where the medical facts and scientific projections end the opportunistic entrepreneurship and marketing begin. The current obesity public health crisis has given rise to a multi-billion dollar nutrition and dieting industry looking to tap into the anxiety and fear we baby boomers all naturally feel about this very important topic. Unfortunately, only a small fraction of what you see or read about diets and nutrition will actually be an honest effort to help you gain better health. The vast majority of diets, nutrition experts, recipe books, celebrity chef programs and all the rest are after your money, or things that turn into money such as TV ratings and advertising revenue. Now, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with wanting to make an honest living. But this is where the balance between integrity and profit comes in with profit often being the end result.
Figuring out if a certain diet or supplement will do a baby boomer any good is surprisingly complicated. It is extremely expensive and time-consuming to do the hard science, run the clinical trials, publish the findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals to then get ripped apart with criticism from other scientists and have to go back to the drawing board, all in an effort to prove that certain diets or nutritional supplements will actually have a fair chance to help you enjoy better health. So the vast majority of businesses looking to make a profit in nutrition simply skip all of that and instead just throw plenty of money at an advertising firm and focus on generating a robust fad with a catchy logo or name and extraordinary claims about the transforming effects their product will have on your health and life. The baby boomer generation has been heavily marketed to with “before and after” photos touting a “new you” in 30 days or less. They bet a lot of their capital on your sincere desire to improve your nutrition and well-being, which they know you take seriously, and that is so they can continually hike the price of their unproven product even more.
Oh NO… Let’s Think: “Diet”
Consider the word “diet.” What comes to your mind when you read that word? Perhaps it’s an odd mix of a shiny new promise, hope, discipline, and self-restriction. Maybe it is dread, temptation, excessive indulgence leading to guilt and discouragement. Whatever you experience when you think of the word “diet” it is highly probable that you have been conditioned to feel all of those things by the messages our peers bombard us with about what makes us good people, what we should value, what we should look like, and the belief that a “diet” will fix our problems.
Now consider the phrase “The _____ Diet.” How many different words do you think you could fill in the blank with? How many times have you seen or heard a version of the phrase? Dozens? Hundreds? This begs the question, “Why so many diets?” Well, the short answer is, “Because none of them really work.” The bulk of the money is in making the sale and not so much in making you healthy for decades to come. Of course, there are several exceptions but for the most part your health is not a concern of theirs. You will never hear them vary from selling you the latest sure thing dieting craze today.
Now for the Really Good News
The solution to the unfortunate state of baby boomers being unhealthy is far brighter and simpler than you might expect! Let us begin by saying that the solution to this problem will improve your overall health, energy, digestion, sleep, mood, and will reduce your excess body weight. It will reduce your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and some cancers. But that’s not all, it will also simplify your life, give you more peace of mind and even banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary! You probably think we are about to sell you one of those miracle supplements we alluded to earlier but it’s really nothing like that and it really will be easier than you think!
The fact of the matter is that the only time-tested method for reducing and keeping your weight down is by understanding the scientific fundamentals of nutrition, taking the time to allow your body to adjust to having better nutrition, making small yet gradual changes that you enjoy and can maintain for years to come after first consulting your primary care doctor. In simpler terms: Never make any dietary change that you don’t intend to continue for years to come. Think of how many diets don’t follow this principle! Every diet out there demands that you suddenly abandon a bunch of “bad” foods you’ve enjoyed your entire life or they expect you to swap one whole meal out of your day with a highly-processed drink powder mixed with water to make a “complete drinkable meal.” Other diets expect you to buy all of your food from them while others want you to cut out an entire class of basic macro-nutrients (be it fat, carbohydrates, or even protein). How are any of these radical diets supposed to be sustainable or even enjoyable for years to come? (Hint: They aren’t!).
Giving Time – TIME
Most baby boomers know that with age comes wisdom, and a large part of wisdom is knowing that “good things come to those who wait.” You may not have heard that old-fashioned saying since your parents said it, especially now that our culture is obsessed with instant gratification. Most fast weight loss scams have started to target younger people and there’s a reason for that. It’s tougher to fool someone who has more hard-earned wisdom and common sense! Today’s baby boomer just wants honest answers not hyped sales pitches.
Those of us with a bit more living under our belt aren’t fully immune to faulty reasoning. One of the greatest and most frequent mistakes we make when dealing with our weight is wanting an instant transformation with very little lifestyle changes. This is, in no small measure, thanks to marketers using dramatic claims and striking “before and after” photos that drills into us the notion that we should expect amazing changes fast. The truth is, we didn’t gain our excess weight overnight, so why should we expect ourselves to lose it instantly? Likewise, we didn’t just suddenly switch to an unhealthy pattern of eating so we should probably take our time in correcting that too. The only ones with a problem with this thinking are the marketing departments because logic and common sense aren’t sexy and therefore don’t sell as easily! Who knows, by ignoring all the hyped up supplements and all the diet fads you might have more free quality time and certainly more spare cash.
Scientific research in the areas of nutrition, physiology, exercise and behavioral science continues to make great strides. Great nutritional strategies that maintain our energy levels throughout the day are being developed. Natural and extremely nutrient-rich ‘superfoods’ have been identified and delicious ways to add them into your daily meals are available. Clinically-proven eating habits that work with your lifestyle and food preferences have helped tens of thousands of people lose weight, even in their later baby boomer years, something many of them never thought was possible! But that’s not all, science is also defining more effective reasoning to re-program our relationship with food and its important healthier habits. The key is to know where to look for the right answers.
