The science of medicine, genetics, psychology and sociology have continued to expand our understanding of not just what keeps us alive and well, but also how we can thrive and optimize every aspect of our lives.
What’s even more amazing is that we’ve also discovered that the human body is immensely more adaptable throughout its lifetime than we could ever have imagined. The old concept of the adult body and mind being static structures void of any growth or regeneration and bound to irreversible old age over time is simply wrong.
BABY BOOMERS ARE TWEAKING THEIR MASTER PLAN
We are now finding that we, baby boomers, are not sentenced to a fixed destiny dictated by our genes. They aren’t a mere set of master plan instructions that rule over our existence and limit our maximal potential.
We’ve now learned that the food we eat and how we use our bodies each day actually influence which genes switch on and off inside each of our bodies trillions of cells. This genetic control gives us the ability to manipulate how our cells and organs function while optimizing the functions of our bodies and minds. All of this by us simply making the right lifestyle choices and eating healthy!
KEEPING IT SIMPLE WITH NATURE
During the 1980’s and 1990’s huge efforts were made to develop what was called ‘gene therapy.’ This revolutionary new field made use of incredibly sophisticated, stratospherically expensive, drugs, viruses, and even microscopic robots to enter our cells then actually alter our genes in order to cure diseases and improve the functioning of our bodies at their most fundamental level, all with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of our health and well being.
However, that approach has proven to be far more expensive and complicated than expected, not to mention out of reach for the average baby boomer looking to improve his or her personal health. A lot of the dedicated research and advancements in science and medicine have now brought us full-circle to realize that nature is far wiser than we thought and all we have ever needed to do to improve the quality of our lives is use our bodies wisely, and nature will take care of the rest, giving us decades more of improved health and wellness!
OUR DYNAMIC BODIES ARE WAITING
For decades we’ve known that babies and young children have amazing abilities to heal, adapt, and overcome physical challenges. If a baby is unfortunate enough to accidentally lose the tip of a finger the medical field has shown that it may have the capacity to actually regenerate and regrow the tip. Doctors also know that when children suffer certain kinds of brain injuries they will be able to adapt their brain function to make up for the loss of tissue.
The enlightening discovery in recent years however, is that adults of all ages have some of those amazing abilities. People in their 50’s to 70’s who suffer a stroke are still able to mount a healing response to that injury. The stroke victim can often be able to remodel and rebuild the brain by making new neuronal connections to reestablish vital functions. Therefore, medical research in pharmaceuticals and early physical therapy is now focusing on how to optimize that reparative process to maximize brain healing when such dreadful event takes place.
As hopeful as it may be to know that we, baby boomers, may be able to heal from a stroke, the best news yet is that we have the power to very significantly minimize our risk of ever suffering a stroke to begin with! Yet this isn’t just true about strokes. It also applies to many other serious conditions we have come to associate with advanced aging. Most of us have been conditioned to accept that in our baby boomer years we will need to simply learn to live with all sorts of health issues such as arthritis, excess body weight, osteoporosis, diminished energy, a decreased sex life, as well as an overall slowing down of all aspects of life. Yet nothing could be further from the truth!
THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR THE BABY BOOMERS GENERATION
Virtually every day new scientific findings support a new understanding that our body is fantastically capable of adapting well into our baby boomer decades. Mental stimulation reduces our risk of dementia. Better and healthy eating tips that are guilt-free, promote a healthy relationship with food, and are sustainable over the long run which can also reprogram our metabolism allowing us to shed excess body weight then keep it off while also reducing our risk of various chronic diseases and some cancers, at the same time improving our immune system.
Physical activities that we enjoy and that engage our minds not only helps fight off arthritis, osteoporosis but it also improves our strength, balance, agility, alertness, focus, sleep and even digestion. It can also increase our lean body mass, which speeds up our metabolism and burns even more of our excess fat tissue.
Improvements in strength, balance, agility and the prevention of osteoporosis have all been shown to reduce the incidence of the dreaded falls, with the resulting injuries, that put so many of our baby boomers in the hospital and often lead to the beginning of a downward spiral into chronic health issues ending with their loss of mobility and independence. Additionally physical fitness and a greater lean body mass means that in the event of a fall you may prevent a more serious injury from occurring.
As you can see, every positive lifestyle change we adopt can have quite a powerful improved effect on the quality of our lives. And we haven’t even mentioned that all of these lifestyle choices can and will counteract the incessant effects of gravity making you look and feel fantastic! How many baby boomers do you know that would not want that?
A recent study showed that up to 80% of our risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension, stroke and heart attacks can be controlled with the right healthy eating habits while the remaining 20% is determined by our genes. Think about that for one minute, eighty percent of your health and wellness is in your hands!
